An Overview of Piracy in the Solar System

An Overview of Piracy in the Solar System
by Rear Admiral Jack Jacobson, Confederate Navy, May 23rd 3029

Piracy has been around since before recorded history.  By the end of the 21st century one of the oldest professions known to man had emerged as a common threat to space travel.  Just as ancient pirates had prowled the trade lanes of earth oceans and seas space pirates prowl the trade routes and supply lines of the solar system in all manner of space vessel.

The earliest space piracy began when disgruntled miners in the Asteroid Belt commandeered their own company vessels over contract disputes and began attacking the ships and outpost of their former employers.  Operating out of abandoned mining facilities these early pirates became yet another hazard for supply and colony ships in the early days of space explorations.  To make things worse it took the various governments at that time took quite a while to negotiate new treaties that allowed them to arm their own vessels to meet this new threat and create effective anti-piracy forces.  Piracy eventually spread throughout the outer solar system all the way to the Kuiper Belt.

Piracy is extremely rare in the inner solar system due to the strengths of the Terran and Martian navies.  Occasionally renegades steel vessels from the inner system and flee to the belt and beyond but raids and attacks on commerce and supply ships are almost unheard of.

Even though Mars controls the Asteroid Belt pirate activity has always been a problem there.  The enormity of the region is a major factor in the success of piracy in the belt and many of the oldest and most powerful pirate organizations operate out of this region.  The belt contains the highest concentration of abandoned facilities in settled space providing plenty of places to hide from authorities.  The constant commerce traffic in the region provides an ample supply of potential targets as well.  The Hilda asteroids are particularly populated with powerful pirate bands to the point that the region is considered a bandit kingdom controlled by the coalition of pirate crews known as “The Brethren of the Belt”.

The Jovian navy has never been particularly strong.  The Imperial fleet, under the direct control of the Emperor, has been largely regulated to a ceremonial guard and the household navies under the control the rulers of the various moons of the Jovian system spend as much time challenging each other as they do chasing down pirates.  The Jovian fleets also suffered massive losses during the attempted expansion of the Empire into Confederate territory that they have never recovered from.  Since that time Piracy has become something of a nuisance in the region.  Many of the Empire’s Dukes hire privateers to protect the regions under their protection from pirate threats but they rarely have the funds to hire the very best pirate hunters to protect Jovian shipping interest and they also have an unfortunate habit of using privateers to wage unofficial pirate campaigns against their rivals.  In the Jovian system the difference between a pirate and a privateer often depends on which Duke you are asking.    The ongoing conflict between the Empire and the M.S.S.R. over the Greek camp of the Jovian Trojan asteroids has make piracy extremely common in that region as well.

The primary duty of the Confederate Navy involves anti-piracy activities.  However due to the sheer amount of territory they have to cover the various member governments frequently hire privateers to keep their space trade safe.  Many of these confederate privateers are actually pirates who have agreed to refrain from attacking confederate ships in order to have a safe port of call for their raids into the Jovian system and the Asteroid Belt.  Still piracy is common in the Confederacy particularly around the smaller and less populated moons that can’t afford much in the way of defense.

Though the Kuiper Belt region is technically under the protection of the Confederacy of Outlying Systems it is basically a no man’s land and home to some of the most dangerous pirates in the Solar System.  The dwarf planet Orcus, frequently referred to as “Pirate’s Rock” or just “The Rock”, is a bandit kingdom controlled by any pirate king strong enough to rule and rulerships changes hands frequently.  Corporations that operate in this region invest heavily in private security to defend their assets.  A loose organization known as the “Kuiper Rangers” wage a private war against piracy in the region.  This vigilante militia consisting of colonist and entrepreneurs also frequently clash with corporate interest in the belt and therefore are considered pirates themselves by most governments.  The Rangers enjoy a heroic status among the colonist and minor powers in the K-Belt and most attempts to track them down have been thwarted by local sympathizers.  Pirates from the Kuiper region frequently engage in raids in other regions where they are feared above all other pirate crews because of their tendency to torture and kill anyone not worth ransoming.  Even pirates from other regions fear their Kuiper counterparts.

Occasionally serious efforts are made by the various system governments to wipe out piracy.  Numerous joint task forces have destroyed equally numerous pirate bases.  Crew after crew has been hunted down in every corner of colonized space.  Punishments for piracy have become more and more severe but the pirates always adapt.  When a strong crew is wiped out rival crews take their place.  When a pirate base is destroyed the pirates simply find another abandoned facility.  It seems that piracy will continue to be a threat for some time.

A Brief History of the Hell Knights Mercenary Company

A Brief History of The Hell Knights Mercenary Company

3015
Formed during the “Trojan War” of 3015 Colonel Johnathan Stoner, a retired Confederate Marine officer, recruited a number of mostly confederate ex-military members to create the force. During the wars the company fought for the M.S.S.R. against the Jovian Empire.

3018
The Trojan war ends. The Hell Knights consist of three regiments by the end of the conflict and as a result of their actions at the “Battle of New Vladivostok” on Ceres have become almost a household name.

3019
The Hell Knights are employed again by the M.S.S.R. to put down the “Ceres Revolt” which consisted of a six month campaign and a two month occupation.

3020
General Johnathan Stoner is wounded fighting pirates in the Kuiper Belt. The Hell Knights have reached about six regiments in size at this point. Colonel Melissa Stoner takes over field command.

3023
General Johnathan Stoner retires on Venus. General Melissa Stoner, Johnathan's daughter, assumes command of the company and obtains letters of mark from the; M.S.S.R., The Jovian Empire, and the Confederacy of Outlying Systems to hunt pirates in their respective territories.

3023-3025
The Hell Knights begin “The Pirate Wars” engaging pirate forces across the Solar system. During these conflicts Major Marcus Jackson, chief tactical officer of the company, develops the “Jackson Doctrine” which outlines a style of lightning warfare based heavily on the use of skimmers and energy weapons. Units which adopt this policy are shown to have a greater degree of success.

3025
General Melissa Stoner is killed on 4 Vesta by Gabrial Clark the leader of a pirate gang known as the “Bloodborn Pirates” during a mech battle. Colonel Marcus Jackson takes over command of the Hell Knights and proceeds to drive the pirates from the asteroid.

3026
The entire mercenary company refits and retrains so that they can realize the Jackson Doctrine. The companies wheeled and tracked vehicles are sold off along with infantry balistic weapons, fixed artillery, and most heavy and super heavy class mechs. The Hell Knights adopt the MacDuff Arms LX-24 Light Laser rifle as their standard Infantry weapon over various assault rifles which is widely viewed as unpopular by the infantry troopers. By the end of the year the Hell Knights number over fifteen regiments although about a regiment of former Hell Knights leave the company to form “Exeter's Armored Calvary” buying quite a bit of the Hell Knights surplus equipment.

3026-3027
The Confederacy of Outlying Systems erupts into a brief but bloody civil war when the Saturn System attempts to strong army the rest of the C.O.S. into transforming to a federalist republic. The Hell Knights offer a very low bid to the Condederacy and subsequently are instrumental in crushing the rebel forces.

3027
MacDuff Arms purchases the Hell Knights for an undisclosed sum and move the entire company to the dwarf planet Pluto where they established a base they name “Fort Stoner”. MacDuff Arms upgrades and expands the company's fleet and enlarges the company to twenty four regiments in size.

3028-Present
The Hell Knights are engaged in several bushfire conflicts. Several regiments are engaged in the trans Neptunoian region fighting against ice pirates. In 3028 two regiments fought against Jovian rebels on Europa and Ganymede. Several regiments have been engaged in counter insurgency operations on Ceres for the M.S.S.R. since 3029. In 3030 the company accepted a contract from the Terran Alliance to hunt Lunar Terrorist who had fled to the Hilda asteroids. The Hilda conflict has become a large scale operation that has required the resources of almost half the company's regiments.

3031-Present
The Hell Knights are engaged against Exeter's Armored Calvary on Saturn's moon Rhea over a legal dispute involving late payments for the surplus equipment. Despite being ordered by the Confederate government to turn over the equipment in dispute Exeter has refused to comply or make financial restitution. The Hell Knights have been allowed to repossess the equipment by force if necessary. So far there have been only a few small skirmishes.
The company has also accepted a contract on Uranus's moon Titania for the “Smith and Wilson Agricultural Corporation” in a dispute over land between the corporation and local militia units as well as rebel Planetary Guard units. The Hell Knights have had difficulty resolving that conflict due to the fact that their resources have been spread thin and several restrictions have been placed on their operations by the Titania government.

A Brave New Blog!

For the past few years my wife and myself have been developing our own science fiction setting for playing table top roleplaying and war games.  We have come to call that setting "Solar Empires".  For the most part we have tracked our progress with that setting on my general gaming blog Nathan "Ironworker" Miller's Miniature Games.  We have also created a kind of living news site for the setting in general called the System News Network which we have sadly not supported as well as we would have liked.  Even though I plan to continue those sites with information about our setting we decided that we needed a blog to track the information specific to the setting and create a kind of easily updated source for the setting in general.

So the content on this site will mostly cover information about the setting such as articles about specific factions, corporations, colonies, governments, ect.  We will include army list for the No Limits war game that we have used to develop the war game content for our setting.  We will also include stats and information we are using for our role playing games using the Savage Worlds rules set.  I plan to make specific tabs at the top of the page to organize the information like you would find in a source book but the main feed will be articles about whatever we are working on at the time.

What I won't be putting on this blog will be game reports and miniature hobby post related to the setting.  The game reports will stay on the System News Network and the hobby articles will stay on my general miniature page.

I feel like this will be the best way to organize this information for our setting without making my other blogs cluttered and unfocused while creating a place to put specific information about the setting for my players and other gamers who have expressed an interest in the setting.
